Fu eretto nel 1397 - da un architetto rimasto sconosciuto - per volere della nobildonna Macciotta Mergulese. Nel Quattrocento, Costanza d'Aragona lo donò alla famiglia Montalto. Nel 1837, fu adibito a lazzaretto a seguito del colera e nel 1854.
